Hola…
Hi Rafa,
Yesterday we had a free day and we went again to the area around Petrola. Thanks to your maps and further information we were able to see a lot of very interesting birds.
On the plateau northwest of Hoya Gonzalo we saw Lesser-short toed Larks (Calandrella rufescens), Spectacled Warblers (Sylvia conspicillata)and north of it ca. 100 Pin-tailed Sandgrouses (Pterocles alchata) in a big flock flushed by a Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), about 20 Lesser Kestrels (Falco naumanni) and 5 Red-billd Choughs (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax). Very successful as you can see. We did'nt find Dupont's Lark (Chersophilus duponti), but we can imagine, that there are just very few in this area. Can you tell us when there was the last record of a singing male, or how much pairs breed there?
The next stop was the area NW of Hoya Gonzalo where we saw in total more than 10! Little Bustards (Tetrax tetrax), it was really amazing, because we heard calling males, saw them flying around an performing display flights. This was really impressive. Thanks a lot for your hint, because we will never forget this experience.
After that, we checked some Lagoons around but they were not very productive, except the Hoya Grande close to Corral-Rubio, where we found ca. 15 Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius), some Little Stints (Calidris minuta) and 11! Sanderlings (Calidris alba), most of them in breeding plumage. In Germany this species is uncommon inland, and numbers over 10 especially on spring migration are quite rare. What about in Spain about this species?
Close to Laguna del Salobralejo we saw 25-30 Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis). While searching for the Red-billed Chough we saw a pair of Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and one 2cy bird.
All in all a very good birding day as you can expect for guys from middle Europe.
Again, thanks a lot for all your tips.
Greetings from Cerdà
